The Week in Social 11/30 - 12/4

Everywhere you look, Iowans are uniting like never before. While times may be tough right now, we’re seeing it won’t stop the great people in the state from supporting one another. Many have taken to social media to help those in their communities, share helpful resources or to simply highlight something positive to bring joy to others. The Week in Social will round up the best of #IowansUnite and share these uplifting stories.

The Greater Des Moines Partnership’s DSM 202ONE Annual Kickoff announced a slam dunk in their keynote speaker, NBA championship winning coach and Carroll native, Nick Nurse.

The Partnership’s Annual Kickoff will serve as the launch to strategic priorities for the 2021 year, as well as a recap of the economic and community development work completed in 2020. Nurse, the head coach of the Toronto Raptors, will be the keynote speaker of the event and hold a question-and-answer session. In addition to his recent championship, Nurse was named the NBA Coach of the year for the 2019-20 season, an unprecedented season that saw the league develop an innovative “bubble approach” due to the COVID-19 pandemic and take a leading role in the social justice conversation.

The event and networking program will take place virtually on Thursday, January 14 from 7:30-9 a.m.

Fun activities with a holiday theme are here and Iowa PBS has made it easy to participate. The December calendar includes arts and craft activities, plus games to keep kids engaged throughout the month. Examples include homemade snow globes, family reindeer ornaments, DIY snowflake decorations and many more. The activities come with a list of the materials you’ll need, easy to follow instructions and pictures to show you what to do at each step. If your kids are looking for ways to get into the holiday spirit, this is one resource you’ll want to bookmark.

Pear Deck, an Iowa City-Cedar Rapids EdTech company that helps teachers foster technology for engagement and understanding from students, announced a merger with GoGuardian, a company that provides a suite of tools to help maximize the learning potential of 1:1 school technology programs.

The companies are aligned in their beliefs that “we need to leverage technology thoughtfully to help students engage in the world with reason, honesty, and empathy,” according to a GoGuardian news release.

Pear Deck will continue to serve as a stand-alone project and will work with GoGuardian to advance the companies’ shared mission of creating “new solutions that help educators do their best work in environments where students can thrive.”

Many food and beverage service businesses embraced outdoor seating during the summer months to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. As the colder weather has set in, these businesses need to find creative solutions to continue serving their patrons.

Mississippi River Distilling Company has responded to the challenge by introducing “Cocktail Castles,” private outdoor spaces furnished with 3 benches and 4 chairs, lights and a small heater. The castles can accommodate up to 10 people in private settings and are able to be booked for 90-minute sessions. During that time, the group will need to fill a minimum $100 bar tab, which can include a variety of the company’s take-home cocktails. The distillery recommends dressing for the conditions and bringing a few blankets to witness great views of the river and a one-of-a-kind chance to enjoy some cocktails with your small, private group.
