The Week in Social 4/19 - 4/23

April 27, 2021

The Week in Social rounds up the best of Iowa’s uplifting stories, exciting initiatives and fun events from all 99 counties discovered through social media. In a time where every bit of good news is cherished, this series is devoted to being a fun, lighthearted way to stay informed about Iowa’s good news.

Iowa City FilmScene, a two-screen venue that hosts filmmaker dialogues, panel discussions and community events, is teaming up with the Iowa City Parks & Recreation Department to host “FilmScene in the Park,” at Chauncey Swan Park. The series will show 12 movies from the end of April–August ranging from 2021 Oscar-winning pictures like “Nomadland” and “Minari” to classics such as “The Wizard of Oz,” Young Frankenstein” and “From Here to Eternity.” See the full schedule here.

A core tenet of Dubuque’s National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium’s values is a commitment to conservation – from that principle comes strong partnerships with other conservation organizations.

At the River Museum’s Party for the Planet on Saturday, April 24, the organization unveiled a new greenhouse on its campus. The Charlie & Vicki Glab Family Greenhouse will be used to educate school-age youth and River Museum visitors on the principles of healthy land stewardship and their impacts on pollinators such as monarch butterflies.

“We can make a massive difference on land-based wildlife habitats through proper land stewardship,” says Curator of Conservation Programs Jared McGovern. “This translates to healthier habitats in our rivers and streams.”

If you’re into meditation, Honey Creek Creamery is offering a unique spin on the practice that is sure to infuse some happiness and calm into your life — goat yoga.

“Generally, in people’s lives I don’t think we get enough laughter and enough joy from day to day, especially with COVID,” said yoga instructor Chelsea Luth. “You’re not thinking about anything negative when you have baby goats jumping all over you.”

The creamery will host three classes per day on Fridays–Sundays from now through the end of May. A spot costs $25 and can be reserved here.

Located in the heart of downtown Des Moines, the Surety Hotel was recently named to Travel + Leisure’s 2021 It List of the Best New Hotels in the World. The list includes 73 of the world’s most impressive hotel openings in the past year and showcases the resiliency of the travel industry in the most difficult year in recent memory.

“[The Surety Hotel’s] a prime example of the new sophistication that’s changing the complexion of this Midwest city, and the revival of the 1913 Beaux-Arts high-rise includes a range of opulent materials and decoration — there are rich hardwoods, leather, and contemporary artwork, and the communal spaces and guest rooms feature mid-century-inspired details,” wrote Travel + Leisure Senior Style Editor Krissa Rossbund. “The overall look is clean and crisp, with a serene palette of neutrals and views of the surrounding urban landscape.” If that sounds like an ideal weekend getaway, book your stay here.

Mount Vernon’s popular Palisades-Kepler State Park reopened on Saturday after several months of work to remove damaged trees, downed limbs and other debris caused by last August’s Derecho.

Roads, hiking trails, picnic areas and fishing access points are all back in proper condition. Reservations for campgrounds are also now available, though the lodge will remain closed for the 2021 season due to roof damage. The reopening of the Palisades means that all State Parks impacted by the Derecho have reopened.
