Isaac Jarnagin’s lens on nature, peace and quiet
Some people just have an instinctual eye for the intersection of visuals and the feelings they can create. Video storyteller Isaac Jarnigan leans into those moments, using his cinematic lens to show Iowa from a different angle and in a way that feels positive and relaxing. Iowa’s outdoor spaces have a way of creating calm, whether it’s a bluff above the river, a trail winding through the hills or a simple gravel backroad, and wherever he is, he finds the clarity and creativity that fuel his work, inviting others into that same sense of calm.
Read on or watch Isaac capture how Iowa’s quiet moments help him find peace and serenity in his everyday life.
What are your top 3 favorite places to explore outdoors in Iowa, and why?
1. Ledges State Park
I love this park because it’s a quick escape from Des Moines and Ames. It has tons of hills, trees, and trails, and my favorite spot is a ledge overlooking the Des Moines River. It’s the best place for me to clear my head and reflect.
2. Random Gravel Roads
This isn’t a single spot, but an experience. I love to drive on the quiet gravel roads you can find anywhere. There’s no destination, and they are usually peaceful. You pass flat farmlands, maybe some hills, and just see the quiet life of Iowa. The only noise is the outdoors and your own thoughts. It’s perfect for exploring without a plan.
3. Lake Panorama & Panora Area
This is my go-to spot for family fun. Lake Panorama is beautiful for soaking up the sun and enjoying the water. Nearby, there’s a bike trail along the Raccoon River, and you can drive over to Guthrie for some really beautiful, vast hills. It’s a great mix of water fun and scenic drives.

If you had to pick the most beautiful view or spot in Iowa’s outdoors, what would it be?
I think it’s called Ledges Table Rock Trail and Inspiration Point.
Why do you want others to see Iowa through your cinematic lens?
When other people digest Iowa, they do it from their first impression, and are quick to draw conclusions. When you see it from my lens, you see things in a different angle and experience that make most people experience a positive, calming emotion.
How do the changing seasons in Iowa influence your creativity and connection to nature?
Spring you feel the excitement of a page turn, getting warmer weather, seeing the trees bloom, snow melt, etc. Summer you are enjoying the heck out of the outdoors, time with friends, using community amenities, and that’s your main focus and it’s awesome. Fall the colors are beautiful and relaxing and it’s a midway transition into a time of reflection. Winter you get to enjoy things a little less, but the snow is beautiful and gives you a break to get some good work done reflect on your year, and get excited for Spring. Winter is very important for me!
